A Few of My Favorite Things: Dystopian Fiction

I’ve talked about a variety of fiction on here because geeks love their escapism and sometimes reality as we know it isn’t enough. I’ll never be rainbows and kittens in my sugar and sometimes, I have to indulge the darkness. I still need to work on optimism but seeing a world that’s worse than mine sometimes makes the whole thing feel better.

I like seeing what other writers imagine as a worse world. What have they changed? What has accelerated? What force are people trying to fight? In dystopian novels, people unite against a cause or toward a solution. While their world is bleaker, they’re also working to save it.

If I hadn't been doing my experiment in optimism, I don't know if I'd have noticed the other layer to dystopian fiction. I'm sure that reason would have been there whether i knew it or not but would I have noticed it?

A Few of My Favorite Things: Fandom Shows

Star Trek, Warehouse 13, Battlestar Galatica, Firefly, Supernatural, Fringe, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and a variety of others have such a devout following that they’ve created their own communities on-line.

Fandoms provide such a level of unity among people who might otherwise be strangers. It creates a common ground and gives you something to be excited about. And let’s face it, fighting over the fate of the world as you know is way more interesting than which scandal is seeking revenge on a desperate housewife or cougar.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Orange and Vanilla Twist Ice Cream Cones

My family had a time share in Ocean City and my grandparents lived near Point Pleasant beach in New Jersey. I spent a lot of my childhood at the beach, on the boardwalk, in arcades playing skee ball, winning cheap plastic trinkets and stuffed animals, and eating an orange and vanilla twist cone. If my childhood had a flavor, that would be it. I still love getting every year in Ocean City.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Peanut Butter in My Ice Cream

I love the combination of salty and sweet. Peanut butter in vanilla ice cream is magic. Something about the melding of those tastes just makes my taste buds dance. It’s OK in chocolate but the flavor can be overwhelming sometimes.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Swimming

It’s time consuming and expensive but whenever I do it, I love it. The ocean, the pool, I find being in the water very relaxing. I wish I could do it more.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Tops with Asymmetrical Zippers/Buttons

I love tops with asymmetrical lines. It’s funky and different but still muggle friendly. If the top is subtle enough it never really looks out of fashion or dated. It’s also a look I pull off well which can be hard to come by.
