A Few of My Favorite Things: Physical Books

I don’t mean interactive books you touch or pop up. I mean any book you pick up and hold. I think ereaders are a good thing. They allow you to take hundreds of books with you wherever you go and many can be had for free or less than $5 but nothing will ever beat a physical book.

You can wander through bookstores (whatever’s left) and pick up any copy that catches your eye. You can notice something you’d never otherwise pick-up and fall in love. You can run your fingers across the pages as you read. You can get that new book or old book smell (it’s a thing, trust me).

I love being able to walk into my room and see the spines of old favorites looking out at me. When you finish a book that broke your heart you can clutch it to your chest as your grieve for characters you’ve come to know and love. You can see what a stranger is reading and make a connection about that a shared book.

Even typeface can change how you see a book. Some fonts have fallen out of favor so you only see them on older editions or classic novels. Some fonts you only see on genre series like Twilight (bash the stories but the font is lovely). Convenience will never trump what all book people have with their books: first love.
