What Should I Be?

I’m not sure what I’m going to do for Halloween this year. I was originally thinking a feminist Hulk but that requires more pieces and makeup than I can really afford to buy. I need to come up with 2 costumes for 2 different parties. Here’s what I’ve got available to me:
-Victorian widow
-Pirate
-Vampire
-Serial killer (they look just like everybody else)
-Stand-up comedian (they look like everyone else except broke)
-Cereal killer
-(Fallen) Angel
-Death/victim of higher education
-Catholic school survivor
Last year I was the color purple and the year before that I was a witch. I might be able to pull off a fae but it’s reachy. I have a bunch of RenFest stuff but that maybe be a little overdone since our RenFest wraps right before Halloween. There’s a little too much of me to love for me to be comfortable as the TARDIS or Lolitapool all night.
I could do a ‘spirit of Halloween.’ I could reuse some of the same pieces I used for the witch but I want my costume to be a bit more straight forward this year. I did a conceptual costume last year.
I’m leaning toward the pirate for one weekend and the widow for another. The widow will require some makeup but I should be able to pick something up at the drugstore. I’d have to make my face very pale but I’ve already got the rest of the makeup for both looks.

Halloween

It’s Halloween. Despite the number of hours left in the day, I feel like I’ve already missed it.

I usually do a bit of decorating, watch the few scary/slasher movies I can handle, catch TV specials, and do some Halloween reading. I haven’t had time to decorate, missed the Toy Story special both times it aired, haven’t read any of my favorite Halloween books, and forgot to watch my slasher movies.

On Halloween I usually go somewhere or do something. I went out last night and will be going out tomorrow so I don’t have the energy for 3 days in a row. I’m staying in this Halloween. I’ve been to other costume parties earlier this month but because of RenFest, that felt pretty normal to me.

Today was the first day I really got to feel Halloween-y and I don’t have enough time to enjoy it. I don’t have time to watch Identity and Sleepy Hollow (the movie), read The Gates or the giant Halloween anthology, and I’m not actually going anywhere tonight.

I think part of it was missing all the insane costumes on the Metro last weekend. I definitely missed some cool activities that would have put me in the spirit because I was off with The Boy. I don’t want to stop what I’m currently reading because I’m very into it. I may have to compensate and do some of this stuff in November or go very big next year.

Maybe watching a slasher movie at lunch would help or seeing my dogs in their costumes.

Short Story: Dying Breed

Vampire turned into a short story. I’m sure I could also do a poem but this was what came out. I feel like it’s the start of bigger story rather than a story unto itself.

Dying Breed

I was a beggar dying in the streets. Disease was taking my body as it was taking so many others. I saw a woman walking down the street. Her clothes gave her away as wealthy and her near perfect face told me she was an angel and I was near the end. I asked her if she was here to take me away. There was a hunger in her eyes when she said “It would be my pleasure.” As I struggled to my feet she leaned toward my face and that’s when I saw her fangs. Before I could react, she was drinking from my neck.

I had never felt so relaxed and happy. Euphoria washed over me. Everything was starting to blur around the edges when I felt the beautiful woman offer me something to drink. I gulped it down hungrily.

The more I drank, the stronger I felt. I could feel the strength returning to my limbs, the warmth returning to my body. I felt alive and well for the first time in ages. With a wicked smile the woman asked me “Do you want to live forever?”

I was promised the world. For centuries, we had it. When you live for such a long time, it’s easy to accumulate wealth. Humans become very predictable creatures. We never stayed in one place for too long. After 10 or 20 years it would become apparent we weren’t aging.

We claimed several countries as our homes living a life of sin and luxury. It was refreshing to enjoy carnal lust with no consequences. Disease was such a peril for so many years. We wanted for nothing and held no envy. Gluttony became overrated since food no longer sustained me and held little taste.

Quenching my thirst became easy when we target the destitute, the dying, the criminals, people no one would miss. The only people of importance we targeted were ones who knew our secret and had no intention of keeping it. We were always able to orchestrate the death so that nothing even hinted at our secret.

Life was far from perfect. Whatever magic that gave us our strength and power provided its own set of limitations. We could never walk on consecrated ground. Given the centuries requirement of regular church attendance, this was occasionally an obstacle we had to work around. Religious symbols burned like fire. Certain herbs could be used to make us ill. For the first time in my life or death, I had allergies.

The worst part was never being able to go out in the sun. I could hide in shadows but direct sunlight would overwhelm my system. For a long time I thought it was heaven’s punishment for our nature. Abominations who aren’t permitted to grace the light of day.

Science has turned a light on my condition which was once magic. UV light causes a fatal reaction in our cells. Our bodies lost the ability to break down the herbs we once thought were poison. Religion is still a problem but no one cares if I attend church. My mate and I were doing quite well for so many years but our numbers are dwindling.

Our absences during daylight hours can be easily explained but still pose problems. Why can’t we join our mortal friends for happy hour in April but always come out in the fall? They have the pictures on social media to prove it. With the internet becoming a permanent part of our world, we’re at great risk of exposure. Even if I completely change my identity and leave the country, all I need is the wrong picture in the wrong place at the wrong time. One of ours was put on a terrorist watch list. He can’t risk open travel for years.

So many stories of our kind show us as powerful. Lords of the underworld, bending the ears of leaders, manipulating the future of mortals everywhere. While we have money and power and often have the ears of leaders, we stay as uninvolved as possible. The bigger our place in history, the shorter our lives would be.

In my latest incarnation I am a scientist. I study blood diseases which has given me an opportunity to analyze our condition. I’ve come very close to isolating what in our genetic code caused us to change, to live without life. This knowledge has generated several questions.

I haven’t told anyone how close I am. Rather than answers, this only generates more questions. Can we be made mortal? Should we allow ourselves to die? Should we sire enough humans that we have a voice in the greater world? How far are we willing to go to save our kind? We are a dying breed but should we allow ourselves to die?

Short Story: Sibling Rivalry

Here’s another piece of my Halloween creative writing. One classic theme is ghosts. I tried to make it poem but it wanted to be a short story. Not my best but not bad. I think it’s sufficiently creepy.

Sibling Rivalry

He told them I ran away. That after so much death I couldn’t bear to stay here anymore. There was only so much tragedy a fragile creature like me could bear. He was entirely wrong. I was in a dark place back then, being squeezed by my despair. Later I wasn’t strong enough to do anything about it. I’m not fragile anymore.

Years have ticked by while he let my home go to ruins. The front porch is warped and one of the windows is broken. The house creaks and groans with age and neglect. Dust and cobwebs are everywhere. My grandmother’s antique mirror is fractured. The piano I played for so many years sits forgotten in a corner. I run my fingers along the keys. It hasn’t been tuned in years but the music brings me back to happier days.

Almost asleep in his drunken stupor he starts. “Who’s there?” He stumbles out of his recliner and looks around. He doesn’t see anyone, not yet. He goes back to watching football, convincing himself it’s the cat he got to keep away mice. He doesn’t know I ran that cat off days ago.

The floor creaks under by feet. I shut the closet door. Cats can’t close doors. The sound of movement gets him out of his seat. He switches off the TV and quietly grabs the gun he always keeps nearby. He doesn’t say anything this time.

He wanders through the hallway, checking the doors and windows. Nothing on this floor but what about upstairs? You never did fix that window or trim back that tree. How many times have kids tried to mess with this house? Better make sure.

Most of the bedrooms haven’t been used in years. He doesn’t even have to go into them to see nothing’s been disturbed, just check the dust. Nothing here, not a soul as far as you can see. He goes back down to watch TV.

I creak open the door to the basement and feel the stairs groan under my feet. I know he hears me. For years he avoided coming down here alone. Too many memories, too much fear. Possibly guilt or regret but I have my doubts. Enough years passed without any consequence that he relaxed. He never felt totally comfortable down here but he stopped being afraid. One of his many mistakes.

I hear him swearing and threatening whoever is sneaking around in his house. I don’t doubt he’s had enough to drink to shoot someone. I’m hoping he does. It will get the neighbors over here faster. He turns on the light, whipping around with his gun drawn. I come out silently from under the stairs.

Shock. Disbelief. Confusion. Fear. “No. You can’t be here. You’re dead! I buried you!” He’s shaking so much he almost drops the gun.

I regard him calmly. “I know you buried me. You’re standing over my bones right now.” He jumps and dances around as though what’s left of my body will rise up and grab him. I move further out from under the stairs. “You’re the reason I’m buried here. You remember that, don’t you?”

Shaking, he nods. I smile as I continue. “You became a real piece of work after you moved out all those years ago. Drinking, lying, stealing, fighting. Showing up drunk to mama’s funeral. Expecting daddy to bail you out of jail while he was dying of cancer. You were nothing but a burden on our family. I stayed here with our father until he died. I took care of him, I planned the funeral. I didn’t see you until the will was read, when you could get your share. Were you really that surprised you got nothing?”

“That wouldn’t stand for you, no not at all. That’s why you came back here, to my home. When you couldn’t make me leave, you wrapped your hands around my throat until I couldn’t fight you anymore.”

My brother was shaking his head. I think he was close to crying. I was no longer calm. I was angry. The fire of my anger was sucking some of the heat out of the already dank basement.

“Your big mistake was bringing me down here to bury me. No one would look here, you wouldn’t let them on the property long enough but I couldn’t leave. I’m anchored to my bones. I’ve been trapped here with you for years. It’s taken me a long time to work up enough strength but over time I learned to move things.”

I looked up the stairs at the basement door. It slammed shut. My brother started muttering incoherently. He was scared for his life. I was glad. “I also learned to do other things like tie off rope.” I reached behind a box of old engine parts and pulled out a perfect noose.

“Oh god no!” he cried. “I don’t want to die.”

I looked at him coldly. “Neither did I.”

He fired the gun, his fear making the shots go wild. The ones that did hit me went right through me. I waited until the gun was empty. I knocked it out of his hand and threw the noose around his neck. He tried to run but I pulled tight, throwing him off his feet. He lay there shaking, begging for his life.

I threw the end of the rope over a rafter and pulled with a strength I hadn’t known in life. I tied off the end on the stair rail. I tossed an old chair close near his feet.

His eyes bulged as the life slowly drained out of him. Taking a wax pencil I wrote my name on the wall. I took my hands and raked my fingers into the hardened dirt of the basement floor.

I’d heard him make an appointment with his parole officer for tomorrow. When he didn’t show, they would come here looking for him. Someone would finally discover my bones and bury what was left of me with my family. I’d sold off my brother’s plot to pay for my father’s funeral. His remains would be the state’s problem.

The final shades of life were draining from my brother. Revenge, while enjoyable, was never my reason. I’d never had the darkness my brother did, at least not in life. I wanted to be free of him, free of this world. I hoped now I would finally get my chance. I go upstairs to watch from the window.

Poem: Rise Up

The month of Halloween is upon us. Since I’ve been trying to work on my creative writing I thought this month I’d do some Halloween poems. I’m opening with an ode to zombies. I like this one but I think it could be better. If I make changes, I’ll add an update.

Rise Up

Cold, comfy, sealed
Trapped, box
Life so far away
Life crying
Rise up
Rip and tear

Splinters, wood, dirt, cold
Stench of decay
Pure black, no sound
Rise up
Rip and tear

Claw at cold and wet
Fight and drag and scrap
Grasp, breath
Smell earth, flowers, death
So much death

World so still
Ground moving but cold
Smooth cold stones
Names and dates
Flowers and sadness
Rise up
Rip and tear

Light, air
Movement, sound
Smell exhaust, clouds, dark
Heat, anger, life
So much life
Rip and tear

Pump pump pump
Worldess chatter
Hunger, empty
So empty, so hollow
Heat, life,
Movement, life
Smell sweat, blood, saliva, fear
Throbbing, running pulsing life
Rip and tear

Screaming, crying
Running, beating
Pulsing, roasting
Blood boiling
Color changing
Hungry, cold,
Dead, stale
Rip and tear

Life, heat, warmth, glory, consume
Soft fragile nourishing life
Howling, crying, anguish, dying
Soft, breakable, hungry, dying
All, must take it all
Rip and tear

Life so much life
Need more life,
Pulse, breath, fire, death
So little life
Fight, consume,
Feel alive
Keep dying
Need more life
Must have life
Rise up
Rip and tear
