Healthy or Clean

I don’t wash my hands a lot.

If I take WMATA or wander around a busy store and no one around me is visibly sick, I won’t wash my hands. Sometimes I’ll forget to wash them before I eat. I’ll wash them if they feel grimey or just did a gross chore. Otherwise I’m lackadaisical about it.

I forgot to sign up for my office’s free flu shot. I grew up in a house where we wore our shoes around unless they were especially dirty. I’ll touch the toilet handle when I flush and make direct contact with the door handle in a public restroom. I’ll let my dogs kiss my face. If the person is not nor hasn’t been recently ill, I’ll share my food or drink.

In the last year I have had no major illnesses. In the last six months I’ve had a couple of colds but they lasted less than four days. One was mild post-nasal drip. The other was mild post-nasal drip and feeling a little achy for a day.

I have friends who are major germaphobes. More than a few friends will not allow you to wear shoes more than a few feet into the house. One not only has the shoe rule but you must also wash your hands upon entry. It’s not my house so I respect those rules although the roommate who tried to use that to get out of housework was full of it.

As far as everyday life goes, these friends get sicker more often and have more severe symptoms than I do. Washing hands, using sanitizer, and ditching your shoes at the door doesn’t seem to do much for them overall.  I think I’ll continue to be a rebel and court trouble.
