For media I read one of the novels that go along with Doctor Who. The Doctor, Amy, and Rory are fighting the Weeping Angels but these angels are different than the ones they’ve dealt with before. And someone else is along for the ride. The Weeping Angels are my favorite Dr Who villain.
For those not in the know, the Weeping Angels are quantum locked. The angels can only move when they’re not being observed. When they are observed they turn to stone and you can’t kill a stone. They feed off potential time energy. If they touch you they send you back in time to live out your life and feed off the energy of the days you would have had. As the Doctor says, ‘the only psychopaths who kill you nicely.’
The story would have been a bit long or detailed to be a normal episode but it works well as a book. It gives you the chance to see multiple perspectives. It also makes it easy to visualize the events taking place which I know my fellow book sluts are wont to do.
The quality of writing was unimpressive. I have no particular complaints but it lacked the same punch as an episode. The books aren’t written by the show writers and the novel writers must work within established characters. Maybe it would have been better if the writers had more freedom but I haven’t seen anything else by this particular writer. It was an enjoyable read but only if you’re a fan of the show.
