For Far,
I went off planet with Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi. I devoured this book in a
couple of days. It was exactly what I needed. I’ve been overdoing the
nonfiction and needed something I could lose myself in. Jack Holloway
discovering what may be a sentient species was definitely it.
It’s a
retelling of a book from the 1960’s that is now public domain. It was a
combination of morality, science, and legality. I was surprised how much time
the story spent dealing with the law although with the protagonist being a
former lawyer, it worked. Jack Holloway reminded me of Captain Malcolm Reynolds
and a few other likeable rogues from fiction. He was smart and sarcastic but
wasn’t a moral paragon so it made him more fun to root for.
It was
light, fast, and fun without being dumbed down. The plot was a little
predictable but all the legal jargon differentiated it enough that I wasn’t
bored. Definitely recommend it.
